CHALLENGE
Create a survey app with a guided workflow.

Persuade leadership it’s the right product move.
RESULTS
Reduced operator training and setup time by 75%

CHALLENGE
Customers had a hard time using the PC app product for drone surveying.
Airware creates software that controls drones to do difficult, dangerous jobs more safely and accurately.
MY APPROACH
I created this concept video to pitch a mobile operator app to Airware leadership, who were skeptical of a mobile device’s capabilities.

I concepted the features and filmed the video, collaborated on UI with my manager.
MY DESIGNS
SIMPLIFYING
I worked with engineering and flight ops to go from ~20 edit fields in the PC down to three in the iPad app.
CLEAR DISPLAY
I went through a variety of color and shape explorations to find the simplest way to display the survey area, flight path, geofence, home, and drone location.
ERROR HANDLING
Controlling aircraft is a complex task. I needed to ask operators to make decisions in an emergency scenario.

Since we are targeting non-technical users, I pushed the engineering team to have the system make as many decisions as possible in emergency cases.

PRINCIPLE PROTOTYPE
I tested with RC plane pilots as proxy users at their club airfield.

*Research was light on this project due to enterprise sales constraints. I used all our internal non-technical users as testers.
RESULTS
"It just works."

Compared to other apps I've used recently, nothing provides as smooth and integrated of a workflow.

If you ever need a reminder of why we are building this app and how we stack up to the competition, grab some other apps and give them a spin. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
